Product Description
The Dime Travel takes Gerber’s clever mini keychain multi-tool and adds features for use during and after air travel. This is a bladeless keychain multi-tool, making it safe for use in facilities with a no-knife standard, as well as for the airport security line. It suspends neatly from a keychain and provides resource for a wide swath of problem-solving potential. With its series of useful tools, including spring-loaded needle nose pliers, the tiny, lightweight Dime spins out assistance as needed. For people who rely on a multi-tool, the carefully selected range of the Dime Travel’s tool series is a recognizable asset. In addition to stainless steel pliers and wire cutters that elegantly butterfly open, there’s a set of spring-loaded scissors, medium and small flat drivers, tweezers, a bottle opener that is exposed even when the tool is closed, and a fine and coarse file. The stand-out addition to this travel-friendly version of the classic Gerber Dime is the evolutionary zipper hook, which attaches to a broken luggage zipper in a pinch. While this is a keychain multi-tool, the Dime Travel doesn’t skimp on elegance in design. From the smooth butterfly open of its sturdy needle nose pliers to the well engineered, comfortably ergonomic handles, the lithe Dime Travel is at the ready to manage obstacles. Pocket this cool little multi-tool whenever you’re headed out of town.

The tool feels solidly built. Will it withstand regular heavy duty use? I don't know. But for occasional household sort of use it should prove fine. The tool assortment is good. It fits easily in pocket, but I feel that carrying on a key chain would probably be a bit unwieldy. But then again I already carry a pretty good deal of "stuff" on my key chain (including travel pen, tweezers, Utilikey and nail clippers). Maybe if I offloaded some of that it would free up space and weight allowance to accommodate the Gerber Dime Travel.
I wouldn't replace my regular tools with this, but when you are out and about to have the variety of tools it provides in your pocket is quite a handy thing.
Word of advice: Narita, Japan airport security considers these particular tools to be "too much like a Swiss Army knife" and will confiscate them! Lost two tools on two different trips. At least the security folks are consistent.
My initial impression was that this tool is small. That's a good thing as I bought it for travel. I have other tools for local use which are bigger and have blades. This is the right size for travel, but is it big enough to be usable? Don't know yet, but will notify if not.
Another initial response was that this tool doesn't have the fit and finish that I expect from Gerber. Attached are two photos showing how the screws seem to have been out in somewhat belligerently. There are many scrapes, one screw may be stripped, and another is filled in for some reason. This is concerning because the tool itself is useless if the screws come apart or if maintenance cannot be performed. Am considering returning this one to see if another one is better quality.
The overall feel is very solid. The tools deploy easily and seem to hold fairly well.
It is not a locking deployment, of course.
Overall, I give this a 3 out of 5. I can see it going to a 4 with good customer support and some assurance that the tool won't come apart. If I really end up using it and it proves to be reliable and capable, it may have an outside shot at an update to 5.

I haven't had it long enough to say that I've really used it, or that it's been torture tested, but it seems to Just Work, and the complement of features is enough not to feel like a consolation prize for not carrying a Swiss Army Knife.
And really, this is the first travel multitool I've found that doesn't remind me of the fact that I'm not carrying a Swiss Army Knife. I still consider the SwissChamp XLT to be absolutely without equal, but this Gerber doesn't feel like a consolation prize. It feels like a tool.
